Meet Doug & Greta Fowler

Greta and Husband

In 2011, Doug and Greta Fowler faced a deeply concerning challenge with their youngest son, then seven years old. As an English, Music, and Special Education educator who had taught from preschool through high school, Greta struggled to understand the academic and behavioral issues her son was experiencing. They had pursued years of Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), and Speech Therapy, but nothing provided lasting relief. They were getting desperate as their son still could not read, had a very limited diet, and still struggled with basic tasks like tying his shoes. They decided to enroll him in the Brain Balance program. Despite Doug's skepticism and the long, hour-each-way drive they made with their other children in tow, they committed fully. The results exceeded their highest hopes. The program was profoundly transformative, delivering more significant progress than the seven years of previous therapies combined. Brain Balance reignited their hope, shattering perceived limits on their son's potential. He blossomed with confidence, began engaging with the world, and even started singing—a joyous milestone his mother had never dared to imagine. Today, his success continues: he got his driver's license, was Homecoming King, played on his high school's varsity Lacrosse team, and is now thriving in college as a walk-on starter for his college Lacrosse team.

Just two years later, inspired by their son's incredible progress, the Fowlers embarked on a new adventure: opening their own Brain Balance center to bring that same hope and experience to their local community. They have since helped nearly a thousand families navigate various struggles. Their students' accomplishments are numerous, including:

  • A student with crippling anxiety starring in their high school's production of Grease the Musical.
  • A student with no reciprocal language learning to speak clearly and engage in conversation.
  • SAT scores improving by hundreds of points.
  • A student finally passing a multiple-times failed exam to become a Vet tech.

Greta reflects on her work, saying, "My favorite part of Brain Balance is seeing the small breakthroughs in physical and functional exercises that I know will lead to big changes as the students' brains and bodies make more and more connections. We celebrate every little win at BB knowing that the little wins add up to big changes that make the world more manageable for our students and families. This is especially rewarding from a teaching perspective. I love what we do!"

We Use Cutting-Edge Technology

Right Eye Transparent Logo

Our program integrates the cutting-edge RightEye Visual Motor Assessment, an FDA-approved eye-tracking system designed to capture and analyze both noticeable and subtle eye movements. This technology provides objective, age-based insights into key visual motor functions like tracking, gaze stability, and visual processing.

Through engaging tasks and games, the system measures eye movement accuracy, reading metrics, and decision-making speed. With live playback and comprehensive data on aspects like words per minute and comprehension, this tool is a proven, scientifically validated solution used across education, healthcare, wellness, and sports performance.

Stories from Brain Balance Center of Wilmington

"We originally placed our son into the 12 week summer program because he was struggling with math, reading comprehension, and reading retention. We were pleasantly surprised by his improvement in other areas (ones we knew he needed improvement in, but not considered by us a “high priority”), like greatly improved balance – used to hate his bike, scooter, and skateboard, but now uses all 3 well. His gym teacher has noticed improved coordination, more desire to participate, and is now one of the faster runners in class. He even said he wants to be a gym teacher when he grows up – big deal coming from someone who used to LOATHE gym! He no longer complains of daily stomach issues and has had a reduction in daily headaches."

Jennifer H., 10 year old son diagnosed with Aspergers/Autism

"[Before Brain Balance] we haven’t had a real exchange of conversation EVER! I am usually telling him to sit up straight or comb his hair or finish his homework. We never talk – but today we did – and it was wonderful!"

Kelly S., 15 year old son who struggled with Social Interactions, anxiety and Aspergers

"Doing this program has showed me that our so called “disadvantages” are easily seen as faults but Brain Balance in a way does not get rid of them as much as it rounds them out. We have learned how to use our ADHD to help us focus on what needs to be focused on and tune out the outside noise."

Ethan W., Age 15
