As a parent, it can be heart-wrenching and exhausting to watch your child struggle with academic, social, or behavioral issues. Brain Balance Achievement Centers has helped thousands of children overcome the challenges of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, learning disabilities such as Dyslexia, processing disorders such as Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), Sensory Integration Disorder (SID), behavioral issues such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Aspergers, Leaky Gut, and a host of other related childhood learning and development issues. The Brain Balance program in Summit, New Jersey, is a non-medical and drug-free approach to overcome the challenges that your child faces on a daily basis.
The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Summit starts with an in-depth assessment of your child to help us personalize the learning program to meet your child’s needs. From there, we have in-center sensory motor training and academic skill sessions that are one hour long, three times per week. Each program is personalized to the challenges of the child and the timeframe varies. The number of sessions we suggest is determined by the results of your child’s assessment. Generally, programs are completed in 36 or 72 sessions, with some children needing more sessions to achieve their goals. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Summit also provides in-home activities including a nutritional program that establishes a healthy environment for the entire family.
If your child has difficulty paying attention, understanding other people’s feelings or talking about their own, has a learning disorder such as dyslexia, or loses their temper often, the Brain Balance Achievement Center of Summit can help you and your child manage or overcome the symptoms of common disorders. Brain Balance does not require that a child has a medical diagnosis, nor do we clinically diagnose medical conditions. Our focus is on understanding the struggles these children experience and helping them develop and strengthen the connections to help reduce those struggles.
For those who do have a diagnosis,1 research has shown that the unique challenges your child is facing can be linked to weak connections across different regions of the brain.
The Brain Balance assessment provides you with a deeper view of your child’s struggles. During the assessment, your child’s sensory, motor and cognitive development are evaluated. This assessment helps identify areas of development that need strengthening. The reasons why a child may excel in some areas but has trouble in others will become clearer. From the results, we create a plan that helps your child overcome their struggles.
Fill out our form now to get started. A Brain Balance team member will reach out to personally discuss your child’s challenges and schedule your child’s assessment.
When kids struggle with focus, behavior or sensory processing, it can be linked to weak connections across different regions in the brain. The good news is, we know that the brain can change in a way that may lead to improvements for your child or teen. The Brain Balance program exercises and activities are uniquely designed to help strengthen and build new connections by using a combination of physical, sensory, and cognitive activities. These new, efficient, and effective connections in the brain lead to improvements in our ability to complete cognitive tasks and in our executive functioning:
When these skills and functions improve, a child may feel improved confidence and be better equipped to engage and thrive in the world around them.
The Brain Balance program was recently part of a research study conducted by Harvard University’s McLean Hospital. The research study focused on the impact of aspects of the Brain Balance program, completed at home, on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).We are incredibly excited to share the preliminary findings of this ongoing research.

"Our daughter Sam had been suffering from a multitude of issues from a very young age that was getting worse and worse with each passing year – severe anxiety, phobias, frequent temper tantrums, poor eating and sleeping habits, sensory issues, and learning disabilities. In the fall of 2009, she began pulling out her eyelashes at the age of seven, and we began a three-year journey into a disorder called trichotillomania. We sought help for our daughter from numerous health care professionals such as psychologists, social workers, neurologists, and psychiatrists, trying cognitive behavioral therapy, habit reversal training, and ultimately, medication. They all kept saying, “it’s anxiety…” but we felt it was deeper-rooted than that. Anxiety lived inside something else going on in her brain. After a meeting with her IEP team last spring, after a year of her being pulled out to a resource room for her learning disabilities, we decided we needed a new plan. The owner, Betsy, and her staff of coaches there were so knowledgeable and supportive. Everything made sense – we were impressed with the testing process and the in-depth individualized instruction we received there. Most importantly, Samantha thrived with each passing week! She became more focused, calm, and confident. At some point during the course of the program, it was like a light switched on and eyelashes began to come in! By the end of the program, the eyelashes are fully grown, and we have not seen any evidence of the trichotillomania returning. We had tried everything before, and have no other explanation than that Brain Balance works! We now have a confident, thriving, ten-year-old daughter. As in all parts of life, there is always room for improvement, but we have to say that Brain Balance changed our family’s life and we are forever grateful."
"I can’t thank the staff at Brain Balance in Summit enough for their ongoing support of Nicholas…and us. Yes, even 15 months later they are there if I have questions, there to support us and be happy in his success – their success through this program. As a parent, there are times when we have to let go and put our trust into someone else’s hands who are more informed, more educated, and more experienced. It’s been two years since that August morning when I walked through the doors of Brain Balance with so many questions, a lot of hesitation and all my hopes for my son put into their program…it’s been two years that I put my son into their hands and they’ve never dropped him, never let us down, never made us regret it. And by us, I am including Nicholas. He sees the positive difference the program made in his life and has said many times that he’s glad he went through it. I can’t say it enough – the Brain Balance program is a program that just should be tried for the sake of any child, tried before medication if possible. It is a journey for you & your child that you will no doubt cherish when you see the positive changes in your child. As I said, it’s not an easy journey but one that is so worth the sweat & yes, the tears."
"My son was an easy-going loving boy until he turned 3. Then something changed. He couldn’t stay still and would get very aggressive and abusive. We started getting phone calls from school. That’s when we started looking for a reason and a solution. A Psychologist evaluation, occupational therapist evaluation, neurologist evaluation, the list is never-ending. By the time he turned 7, we finally got an ADHD and Sensory Disorder diagnosis. When I was browsing the bookstore, I came across “Disconnected Kids”. I read the first 10 pages in the store, went home, found the closest Brain Balance Center to us, and called them. We started the program 2 months later. Can I say he’s a completely different child now that he’s done with the program- no, he’s not. But the small changes that happened throughout the program are amazing. The child, who would only eat one meal a day, forcefully, because he was never hungry, now eats 3-4 times a day. He experiments with his food and eats foods I never thought he would touch. The child, who never liked to be hugged or kissed (couldn’t stand the skin to skin contact), now hugs and kisses me every day. The child, who used to have tantrums because he couldn’t get what he wanted, now rationalizes and asks me what he can do to earn what he wants. The child, whom I used to spend 2 hours trying to catch so he could do his homework, now comes home and sits down to do his homework all by himself. This is just a small portion of the changes we see. If you look at each change separately- it doesn’t look like a big deal, but all of them together have made our life so much easier. Now I have a mature 8-year old boy, whom I can have full and interesting conversations with, who understands his responsibilities and follows through with his promises. The Summit Brain Balance Center has people who really care about your child and kids feel that. My son loved going there, and not once complained that he wouldn’t go. Would I do it again, now that I see the results? In a heartbeat."
Brain Balance of Summit’s center director Betsy Stoeber opened in 2011 based on her own son’s phenomenal success in the program (he attended the center in Norwalk, CT before there were centers in NJ). Now, almost a decade later, Betsy and her caring staff have supported numerous kids and their families through successful Brain Balance program terms. Betsy’s professional background pre-Brain Balance was in business, but she has eagerly made the transition to working with children and families. She holds a MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business and a BA from the University of Michigan. In early 2011, she successfully completed training through the Brain Balance Academy, training directly with Brain Balance founder Dr. Robert Melillo. The story of Betsy’s personal involvement with the Brain Balance Program can be heard in this segment of The Dr. Rob Show (a pilot Dr. Melillo created a number of years ago). Betsy continues to further her knowledge of the brain, hemispheric integration, and neurodevelopmental issues of childhood through ongoing training and study. She has made it her mission to communicate with her community about the root cause of the academic, behavioral and social challenges experienced by so many children, as well as to be a source of information for families on parenting and healthy living. Above all, she enjoys being a part of the achievement and success of children – her own, and those who come to Brain Balance of Summit.
Kyla Murray is the Program Director at Brain Balance of Summit and is trained in all aspects of the Brain Balance program. She has always enjoyed working with children of all ages to help them reach for their goals and strive for their highest potential. Kyla was raised by a doctor dad and practice manager mother, with an emphasis on clean living and holistic health. Kyla received her B.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a concentration in Speech-Language Pathology from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. When not working with kids and their families at Brain Balance of Summit, Kyla enjoys traveling, beach trips, meeting new people, and spending time with family.
Pragya joined the Brain Balance of Summit staff after experiencing her own child’s growth and accomplishments in the program. After speaking with many families on an informal basis about her love of the program, Pragya felt inspired to join the team. With a background in sales, marketing and advertising, Pragya enjoys the daily interaction she has with families seeking solutions for their struggling children. She says, “When I’ve successfully communicated what makes Brain Balance different and the light bulb goes off for a parent, I know I’ve put another family on the path to a brighter future.” Pragya actively encourages families to reach out to her — she hopes to speak with you soon!

Laura Petrou is a sensory motor coach at Brain Balance of Summit. She moved to the US from Colombia in 2004 (so, she speaks both Spanish and English!). In Colombia, she earned a degree in Physical Therapy and a specialization in Neuro-rehabilitation, which enables her to have experience with neuroplasticity. She has been working as a physical therapist for twelve years. She also currently works independently with children with Autism. She says, “I love working with the kids at Brain Balance. The program is very motivating and interesting for them because there are so many different aspects of it, such as sensory motor and cognitive. It is not so much a routine for them, and it is great to see how much they enjoy the sessions. We of course love seeing them make great progress!” Laura also likes the team aspect at Brain Balance. “All of the staff members work together to decide the best way to help each child.”
Laura has two daughters, aged 10 and 7, who both have hearing loss. She works with both of them to help with their communication skills. Laura likes to travel and spend time with her family. She also enjoys playing tennis, soccer, reading, listening to music, and dancing.

As many BB of Summit students know, Miss Stefani loves Star Wars, cats and has appeared as a Disney Princess at many events.
