Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services.

What is Brain Balance, and what does it help with?

Brain Balance is a personalized, non-medical program for children, teens, and adults. Rather than working on one symptom at a time, we look at foundational brain-body functions — including sensory, motor, visual, auditory, and cognitive areas — that support focus, learning, coordination, behavior, and self-regulation. We then build an individualized program designed to strengthen those areas.

Is Brain Balance the same as tutoring?

No. Tutoring helps a child practice specific academic content, like reading or math. Brain Balance works a step earlier — on the foundational brain-body functions that make focus, learning, and self-regulation easier in the first place. Many families come to us after tutoring helped some, but not enough.

How is Brain Balance different from occupational therapy, counseling, or other therapy?

Occupational therapy, counseling, and other therapies often focus on a specific area of need, such as motor skills, sensory processing, emotional health, or behavior. Brain Balance takes a broader approach by looking at how multiple brain and body systems — including sensory, motor, visual, auditory, cognitive, and reflex function — are working together.

We use that information to build one personalized program designed to strengthen the underlying functions that support focus, learning, coordination, behavior, and self-regulation.

Is Brain Balance a non-medication approach to ADHD and other challenges? Does it replace medication or therapy?

Brain Balance is drug-free and non-medical. We don't prescribe, adjust, or manage medication. Many families choose Brain Balance because they want a non-medical approach focused on strengthening the areas that support attention, regulation, and learning — and some participate alongside medication, therapy, or other services. Decisions about medication should always be made with your healthcare provider.

What if we've already tried tutoring, therapy, medication, or other programs?

That’s very common, and often it’s exactly why families reach out. Many have already tried tutoring, counseling, therapy, medication, school interventions, or other approaches and may have seen some progress, but still feel like something is missing.

Those supports can be valuable, but they often address a specific part of the struggle. Brain Balance looks more broadly at the foundational brain-body functions that support things like attention, learning, regulation, coordination, and processing to better understand what may still be contributing to the challenges you’re seeing.

The assessment helps us determine whether there are areas we can strengthen that haven’t been addressed yet — and whether Brain Balance makes sense as the next step.

Do you work with kids with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety, or similar challenges? Does my child need a diagnosis?

Yes, we do — and no, they don’t. We work with families whose children have those diagnoses, as well as families who don’t have a diagnosis at all. A diagnosis is not required to start. We don’t treat the diagnosis itself; we look at how your child is functioning across areas like attention, regulation, coordination, and learning, and build a plan from there.

Do you diagnose or test for ADHD, autism, or learning disorders?

No. Brain Balance does not diagnose ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or other learning disorders, and our assessment is not a medical or diagnostic evaluation.

What we do is different. A diagnosis can help identify what a set of challenges is called; our assessment looks more closely at the underlying areas of brain and body function that may be connected to those challenges. Depending on the individual, that can include attention and working memory, sensory and motor processing, visual and auditory processing, coordination, retained developmental reflexes, and how those systems are working together.

The goal is to better understand what may be contributing to the struggles you’re seeing so we can determine whether Brain Balance is a good fit and, if so, what areas we would want to strengthen.

What ages do you work with?

Brain Balance works with children starting around age 4, through the elementary, middle school, and high school years, and into adulthood. The program is personalized based on the individual’s age, needs, and assessment results, so the activities and recommendations are tailored appropriately across each stage.

How do I know if Brain Balance is a good fit for my child?

We start by understanding the concerns you’re seeing and then use the assessment to look more closely at the areas that may be connected to those challenges. A Director brings those pieces together to determine whether Brain Balance appears to be a good fit and, if so, what kind of program would make sense. We don’t believe every child needs Brain Balance — if we don’t think it’s the right fit, we’ll tell you.

What happens during the Brain Balance assessment?

The assessment is a one-time appointment, typically about 90 minutes (sometimes shorter for very young children). We look at areas that can include primitive reflexes, coordination, sensory and motor function, visual and auditory processing, and cognition, to better understand how your child is functioning.

The process also includes time with a Director to talk more deeply about the concerns you’re seeing and how those challenges may connect within the Brain Balance framework. After the assessment, we review the results with you, explain what we found, and — if Brain Balance is a good fit — recommend a personalized plan. If it isn’t the right fit, we’ll tell you.

What will my child actually do during the assessment?

Your child will complete a series of short activities designed to look at how different brain-body systems are functioning. That can include balance and coordination tasks, rhythm and timing activities, fine and gross motor exercises, core strength, visual and auditory processing activities, cognitive tasks involving focus, processing, and working memory, and an evaluation of retained developmental reflexes. Some parts may feel more like exercises, movement games, or "brain games," while others are more structured activities or tests. We may also use specific equipment or activities to look at areas such as vestibular function and visual tracking. The goal is to gather a broad picture of how your child is functioning across multiple systems — not to see whether they can "pass" or "fail" any one task.

How long is the program, how often do we come in, and do you offer at-home or hybrid options?

Most Brain Balance programs run approximately four to six months, although program length varies based on the assessment results and the program recommended.

Our traditional in-center program meets three times per week, typically during after-school hours. We also offer hybrid and at-home options for families who need more flexibility. Those programs include at least one private, live 1:1 session with a Brain Balance coach each week, along with additional planned work completed at home. Hybrid formats include one or two in-center sessions each week.

Your Director will recommend the program structure that best fits your child’s needs, assessment results, and your family’s schedule.

How quickly will we see results?

Every person responds differently, so we won’t promise a specific result or timeline. That said, Brain Balance is an intensive, structured program, and many families begin noticing meaningful changes within the first several weeks. Other improvements build more gradually as the program progresses.

Most programs are completed in approximately four to six months, so the goal is not indefinite support — it is to identify the areas that need strengthening, work on them consistently and intensively, and create meaningful change over a defined period of time.

We track progress throughout the program using objective measures as well as what you’re seeing at home, at school, and in everyday life.

Is there research behind Brain Balance, and does it actually work?

Yes. Brain Balance has eight peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2024 examining areas including attention, cognition, behavior, emotional functioning, and developmental outcomes. Those studies have reported measurable improvements in a number of those areas, with research collaborators including McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, and Cambridge Brain Sciences.

The research is promising, although the studies vary in design and size and more controlled research is still needed. Individual results vary, which is why we start with an assessment to determine whether Brain Balance appears to be a good fit for your child and what areas may need to be strengthened.

If you'd like to review the research yourself, you can see the published studies and summaries on our Brain Balance Research & Results page.

How much does Brain Balance cost?

The initial Brain Balance assessment is $295, and completing the assessment does not obligate you to enroll in a program. If Brain Balance is recommended, tuition is based on your child’s individualized plan and covers a comprehensive program that typically runs over several months rather than being priced as individual visits.

Because every recommendation is personalized, the total investment varies. Your Director will walk you through the recommended program, the tuition, and available payment options so you understand the full commitment before making a decision.

Does insurance cover Brain Balance? Can I use HSA or FSA funds?

Brain Balance is a private-pay, non-medical program, so it is not billed through traditional health insurance. Some families are able to use HSA or FSA funds depending on their individual plan, although coverage is not guaranteed.

If Brain Balance is recommended, your Director can also walk you through the available payment options and help you understand the financial side before you make a decision.

What's the first step?

You have two options: talk with one of our Directors, or schedule the $295 Brain Balance assessment. Either way, we'll learn more about what you're seeing, answer your questions, and help you determine the right next step for your family. Completing an assessment does not obligate you to enroll in a program.

Growing up, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. Being raised in a family of great educators, I saw the difference they made in individuals’ lives. Despite my desire to teach, my parents encouraged me to explore other areas of study, which led me to psychology. I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in Psychology and went on to earn my MA in Marriage and Family Counseling from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Research Shows Brain Balance is Effective

A Harvard study found that kids who participated in the Brain Balance Program saw a significant reduction in ADHD index scores, discernible changes in hyperactivity, enhanced cognitive attention, and reductions in oppositional behavior.

We are continually collaborating with world class researchers to show the efficacy of the program and reveal through data how the Brain Balance Program can help children, teens and adults improve.

"Our experience at Brain Balance, I must say has been beyond our belief. We were very skeptical because nothing had working with our son. We didn’t know if Brain Balance was all it said it was. But, after going through the program we have watched our son regain himself in ways that didn’t seem were possible. The growth and the self-esteem gained cannot be put into words."
