About the Brain Balance Program in Des Moines

The Brain Balance Program is made up of physical and sensorimotor exercises, academic skills training and healthy nutrition. It is tailored to the needs of your child, and delivered in a uniquely systematic approach that you'll be hard pressed to find anywhere else.

Program Format

Your child can work onsite at your local Brain Balance Center with our coaches three times per week. We also offer an at-home virtual option that is parent-led. You'll have weekly video check-ins from your program coach.

Do you accept insurance?

Brain Balance is not a medical program and does not provide a diagnosis, nor is it covered by health insurance. Our staff are all trained and certified through Brain Balance, and can receive additional certifications as Board Certified Cognitive Coaches, and Behavior Management through outside accrediting agencies.

Is there any research behind the program?

Is there any research behind the program?

Harvard University’s McLean Hospital completed a study which demonstrated that the Brain Balance Program is as effective as stimulant medication in alleviating ADHD symptoms among children. Cambridge Brain Sciences also collaborated with Brain Balance on a study the results of which show that children who completed three months of the Brain Balance Program displayed significant improvements in cognition, particularly in areas of memory, reasoning, verbal ability, and concentration. Research published in the Journal of Mental Health and Clinical Psychology found that the Brain Balance Program is an effective, non-drug option for improving mental well-being, specifically in areas including overall happiness, emotional functioning, anxiety and social engagement.

Teresa Kaelin

Teresa Kaelin

Owner & Virtual Director

Teresa Kaelin MSOTR/L has been operating Brain Balance Centers for over 8 years. Teresa found Brain Balance in her own search to help her children succeed. Her son had sensory processing issues, ADHD and other developmental concerns to which she tried traditional methods for 15 years before changing her sons’ life with Brain Balance. Brain Balance had a profound impact on her son and their family. Brain Balance has helped all her children reach their full potential and succeed in their endeavors, not only with developmental concerns but also in football and swimming. Teresa has a Master of Occupational Therapy and a Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders. She worked for over 25 years as an Occupational Therapist, spending most of her career working with children with disabilities in private practice and educational settings. She conducted various continuing education courses to educators on topics of Sensory Processing, Handwriting, and Executive Functioning. Tereas also has taught Anatomy/Physiology at a local community college for over 10 years. In her free time, Teresa likes to spend time with her family, travel to watch her children play their college sports, and travel to new locations.

Donni Kinghorn

Donni Kinghorn

Center Director

Donni Kinghorn is the Center Director at Brain Balance of Des Moines. She began working with Brain Balance when she was in college as a part-time coach in April 2022, and took over as the Center Director in April 2023. Donni received her B.A. in Health Psychology and Psychology with a minor in Health and Exercise Science from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Her passion has always been to learn about the brain-body connection and help others improve their mental and physical wellbeing, so working here at Brain Balance has always been the perfect fit for her! Her favorite part of Brain Balance is getting to know all of the families Brain Balance serves and hearing all the ways the program has changed lives outside of our doors. Additionally, she enjoys providing health coaching for Brain Balance families to improve the environment for brain and body health outside the program as well! In her free time, Donni loves to lift weights, read, spend time outdoors, and enjoy time with her friends and family!

Emma Samples

Program Director

Emma Samples is the Program Director at Brain Balance of Des Moines. She first joined the center in May 2023 as a part-time coach right after graduating college, and quickly stepped into the Program Director role that August. Emma earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Behavioral Psychology from the University of Northern Iowa. While in school, she discovered her passion for child behavioral studies and focused her work on helping kids thrive and reach their fullest potential. She is now continuing her education through a master’s program in Industrial-Organizational Psychology to deepen her understanding of behavior and development. What Emma loves most about her role at Brain Balance is the hands-on experience of helping children grow, mature, and build skills that will benefit them for years to come. She also treasures the connections she forms with both the children and their families, making sure everyone feels supported every step of the way. Outside of work, Emma enjoys being outdoors, going for walks, watching movies, and spending time with the people she loves.
