Dry Brushing and Other Favorite Sensory Solutions


Learning and behavioral disorders often go hand in hand with sensory sensitivities or even sensory processing disorder. The good news is there are tools available to help integrate sensory input and minimize sensitivities. Read on to find some sensory solutions that are not only effective, but also pretty easy to do.

Dry Brushing

A sensory brush is similar to a surgical scrub brush, or a brush you use to remove the silk from a cob of corn. These are beneficial for general sensory dysregulation, hyperactivity and tactile sensitivity.

It is beneficial for individuals who engage in undesired or unsafe behaviors, or who are sensory seeking. It can also help children who are overly cautious, picky eaters or slow-to-start. When used regularly, dry brushing can help a child optimize their activity and arousal levels, while reducing sensory defensiveness.

Weighted Blankets

A weighted blanket can help both children and adults who suffer from a sensory processing disorder. When used, it can help the individual feel more relaxed and calmer. Research has also proven that these blankets help to reduce cases of insomnia, while also easing pain.

While the weights may vary based on the user’s comfort level and need, these are typically made with about 10 percent of the person’s body weight. This allows the blanket to offer a firm, yet gentle pressure, which is called “deep pressure touch.”

Dough or Putty

Dough or putty can be used for children with sensory issues, too. It’s fun to manipulate and squish, strengthens the muscles in the hands, and helps children learn to self-soothe. You don’t have to purchase anything special, as Play-Doh will do just fine. There’s also thinking putty available at stores now, that is specifically designed to help keep small minds and hands occupied and calm. It’s available in several colors, and different textures.

Weighted Lap Pads

If you need a calming tool for on-the-go, and the weighted blanket works great at home, then consider weighted lap pads. These are the ideal self-soothing tools for school, the office or even when going on vacation. The weighted lap pad is lighter and smaller than the blanket, and typically measures 12 to 18 inches long, weighing about two pounds.
