Funding Options for Ohio Families

Ohio Autism Scholarship Program

The Ohio Autism Scholarship Program gives parents of eligible children with autism the option to receive their child’s education and services through participating providers outside their school district. Covered services must be included in the child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Autism Education Plan (AEP).

A student may qualify if the student has been identified by their school district as a child with autism and has an agreed-upon, current IEP—or has a qualifying private autism diagnosis reflected in an IEP or district-developed AEP. Children may apply beginning at age three.

Post Adoption Special Services Subsidy (PASSS)

PASSS is an Ohio program designed to help eligible adoptive families access services for a child with qualifying physical, developmental, mental health or emotional needs.

Eligible children may receive up to $10,000 during an Ohio fiscal year—or up to $15,000 when qualified residential treatment is recommended. Funding is subject to state approval and availability, and families must apply again for each fiscal year in which services are needed.

Because PASSS does not cover every type of service, families should obtain approval from the Ohio Department of Children and Youth before assuming that Brain Balance services will qualify. Eligibility may depend on the nature and purpose of the services requested.

Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Program

The Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Program provides funding for eligible Ohio students with disabilities to receive special education and related services from participating providers.

Students generally must be between ages three and 21, have a current IEP developed by their public school district and have an Evaluation Team Report identifying a qualifying disability and need for special education or related services. The scholarship amount is based on the primary disability identified in the student’s Evaluation Team Report.

Coverage depends on the specific funding program, your child’s eligibility, approved services, available award balance and authorization from the applicable state agency. Some services or expenses may not qualify, and families may be responsible for any remaining balance.

Does Brain Balance determine whether my child qualifies?

No. Eligibility and funding decisions are made by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, the Ohio Department of Children and Youth or another designated program administrator. Brain Balance can explain its services and provide supporting information when appropriate.
