Your child has a tutor. You're practicing at home. Their teacher has provided extra help. You've bought the workbooks, reviewed the flashcards, practiced the spelling words, and gone over the same math concepts again and again.
And yet, it still isn't sticking.
Maybe your child understands something during tutoring but can't remember it the next day. Maybe homework takes hours, even when they seem to understand the material. Perhaps they're falling behind despite putting in real effort, or their biggest challenges aren't limited to reading and math anymore. They're also forgetting assignments, losing materials, struggling to get started, becoming overwhelmed, or shutting down when schoolwork gets difficult.
When this happens, parents often assume their child needs more tutoring.
But sometimes the problem isn't that a child hasn't been taught the material enough times. The problem may involve the underlying cognitive, sensory-motor, attention, memory, processing, and executive function skills the brain relies on to learn efficiently in the first place.
That's an important distinction.
Tutoring can be an extremely valuable tool. But if your child continues struggling despite repeated academic instruction, it may be time to ask a different question:
Is my child having trouble learning the material, or are the underlying skills needed for learning getting in the way?
Tutoring is primarily an academic intervention.
A tutor may help a student relearn material they didn't understand in class, practice a particular skill, receive additional instruction, prepare for a test, or catch up in a subject where they've fallen behind.
For example, a math tutor might:
A reading tutor might provide additional instruction and practice in areas such as phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, or writing.
That repetition can be exactly what some children need.
If a child missed an important concept, didn't receive enough instruction, needs additional practice, or benefits from having material presented differently, tutoring can help close those academic gaps.
But tutoring still depends on the child's brain being able to attend to, process, remember, organize, and retrieve what is being taught.
That's where the distinction becomes important.
Some of the most important academic warning signs appear when there's a mismatch between the amount of instruction your child is receiving and their ability to retain and apply it.
You may want to look beyond tutoring alone if your child:
A particularly important question for parents to ask is:
How hard is my child trying compared with the results they're getting?
When a child is receiving instruction, practicing, and genuinely trying but their performance remains inconsistent, simply adding more repetitions of the academic material may not address everything contributing to the struggle.
Academic performance requires much more from the brain than knowing the answer.
Think about what has to happen for a child to complete something as seemingly simple as a homework assignment.
Their brain has to:
Reading, writing, math, test-taking, classroom participation, and homework all rely on multiple systems working together.
This is why a child's academic struggle isn't always simply an academic knowledge problem.
Learning depends on networks throughout the brain communicating efficiently.
Several underlying cognitive functions play particularly important roles in academic performance.
Before information can be learned, a child has to attend to it.
A student who frequently misses pieces of instruction may have incomplete information to work with later. More tutoring can provide another opportunity to hear the information, but persistent attention difficulties may continue interfering with the learning process.
Working memory allows us to temporarily hold and manipulate information.
A child uses working memory when remembering the steps of a math problem, following several directions, keeping track of what they've read in a paragraph, or organizing an idea while writing.
A student may understand each individual step but still lose track of the information before completing the task.
Children also need enough cognitive processing capacity to take information in, make sense of it, and respond.
When processing requires significant effort, classroom instruction can move on before the child has fully worked through what was just presented.
Executive functions help children plan, organize, initiate tasks, manage time, monitor performance, shift between tasks, and control impulses.
A child may understand algebra perfectly well but still earn poor grades because assignments aren't turned in, directions are missed, studying isn't organized, or tests are rushed.
That isn't necessarily a lack of academic knowledge.
Learning also requires the brain to encode information, store it, and retrieve it when it's needed.
This helps explain one of the most frustrating experiences parents describe:
"I know they know this. We went over it yesterday."
If information isn't being efficiently encoded or retrieved, repeatedly teaching the material may produce limited results.
Learning isn't isolated from the rest of development.
The brain is constantly processing information from the senses and coordinating responses through the body. Brain Balance's approach considers sensory processing, coordination, balance, body awareness, visual-motor skills, cognitive skills, and other developmental functions as interconnected parts of how the brain receives, organizes, and responds to information.

This can be one of the hardest questions for parents and teachers.
A child who doesn't start homework may look unmotivated.
A child who repeatedly forgets assignments may look careless.
A child who rushes through a worksheet may appear unwilling to try.
A child who melts down over homework may seem oppositional.
Sometimes behavior is behavior. Kids procrastinate, avoid things they dislike, and make choices just like adults do.
But when the same patterns persist despite consequences, encouragement, instruction, tutoring, and significant effort, it is worth considering whether the child is struggling with the capacity required to perform the task consistently.
Look for patterns.
Does your child understand the material but struggle to demonstrate that understanding consistently? Does a task require dramatically more time or energy than you would expect? Are academic struggles occurring alongside difficulties with attention, organization, emotional regulation, memory, or sensory processing?
If several of these challenges travel together, focusing exclusively on the academic symptom may leave important underlying skills unaddressed.
First, don't assume tutoring has "failed."
Ask instead what information the experience has given you.
If tutoring helps your child understand a concept and the new skill sticks, tutoring may be addressing exactly what they need.
If progress occurs but disappears without intensive support, or your child repeatedly understands material but can't independently retain, retrieve, organize, or apply it, consider looking more broadly at the skills involved in learning.
Depending on your child's individual situation, a whole child educational support approach could include talking with their teacher, pediatrician, school support team, psychologist, occupational therapist, speech-language professional, or another qualified provider. The goal is to look beyond the academic symptom and consider the different factors that may be affecting your child's ability to learn and perform consistently.
It can also mean evaluating the foundational sensory-motor and cognitive functions involved in learning.
The simplest distinction is:
Tutoring teaches academic content. Brain Balance focuses on strengthening the underlying functions the brain uses to learn that content.
Brain Balance isn't a tutoring program, and it isn't intended to replace appropriate academic instruction.
Instead, the Brain Balance program was designed to strengthen the brain functions underlying attention, behavior, social, and executive functioning through an integrated approach combining cognitive training, sensory-motor exercises, physical activity, and nutritional guidance.
For a child struggling academically, that can mean working on functions such as:
This distinction matters because knowing something and having the cognitive capacity to consistently use what you know aren't always the same thing.
One study conducted in collaboration with Cambridge Brain Sciences examined cognitive performance in children and adolescents with developmental and attentional challenges participating in the Brain Balance program.
The study included 478 participants ages 4–18 who completed three one-hour Brain Balance sessions per week for three months. Participants ages seven and older completed 12 standardized Cambridge Brain Sciences cognitive tasks before and after program participation.
Participants ages seven and older who completed the three-month program showed significant overall improvement across all 12 cognitive tests measured, while a comparison group that had completed an average of only 27 days of the program improved on a smaller number of tasks. The greatest improvements were observed in memory, reasoning, verbal ability, and concentration.
The cognitive measures also included areas directly relevant to learning, including attention, working memory, processing, planning, and executive function.
An important part of the study design is that Brain Balance participants were not trained on the Cambridge Brain Sciences tests. The improvements therefore represented transfer to unpracticed cognitive tasks rather than simply getting better at exercises they had repeatedly practiced.
There are important limitations to consider. Participants were not randomly assigned, and the comparison group had received some Brain Balance exposure rather than serving as a true no-treatment control group. The study also did not include long-term follow-up to determine whether the cognitive gains were sustained. More randomized, controlled research is needed.
Still, these findings are relevant to an important question for families: Can skills such as attention, memory, reasoning, and executive function improve without simply practicing a specific academic task?
This study provides encouraging evidence that broader cognitive changes were observed following program participation.
Research isn't the only way Brain Balance measures outcomes.
Between 2022 and 2025, Brain Balance collected parent-reported outcomes from more than 2,500 participants who entered the program with concerns across six developmental areas.
Among participants with baseline concerns:
Academic outcomes were among the areas measured. Among participants who began with concerns in these areas, 80.3% improved in academic engagement and 80.3% improved in reading/writing, according to the parent-reported survey.
These results are based on a parent-reported Multi-Domain Developmental Survey of 2,585 participants with baseline concerns, and individual results vary. They should be understood as parent-reported outcomes rather than the results of a randomized clinical trial.
It doesn't necessarily have to be one or the other.
In fact, this may be the wrong question.
A child with gaps in math, reading, writing, or another academic subject may still benefit tremendously from tutoring. Strengthening cognitive skills doesn't automatically teach a child multiplication tables, spelling rules, grammar, or the academic content they missed while struggling.
Think about the two approaches as addressing different parts of learning:
Tutoring helps teach and practice the skill. Brain Balance focuses on strengthening the underlying functions that help a child attend, process, remember, organize, and apply what they're learning.
For some families, Brain Balance can therefore complement tutoring and other educational supports rather than replace them.
A child who has spent years struggling may have real academic gaps to make up. After strengthening foundational cognitive and sensory-motor functions, tutoring may still be valuable for helping that child learn or relearn missed academic content and continue building subject-specific skills.
The goal isn't to choose sides between Brain Balance and tutoring.
It's to determine why your child is struggling and make sure the support you're providing matches the problem you're trying to solve.
