When parents think about helping their child's brain develop, upper body strength probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

But the truth is, developing strength through the shoulders, arms, chest, and upper back plays an important role in how children move, learn, pay attention, and regulate their bodies.

Strong upper body muscles help children maintain good posture, stabilize their core, coordinate both sides of the body, and efficiently process sensory information. Pretend to move like different animals, such as bear walks, crab walks, inchworms, or wheelbarrow walks.

Playground Climbing Adventures

Encourage climbing ladders, monkey bars, climbing walls, ropes, or other playground structures that safely challenge strength and coordination.

Push and Pull Games

Push a loaded laundry basket across the floor, help push a shopping cart, pull a wagon around the yard, or enjoy a friendly game of tug-of-war.

Wall Push-Ups or Floor Push-Ups

Modify the activity based on your child's ability. Even a few repetitions help build shoulder and core strength.

Tummy Time for Older Kids

Lying on the stomach while propped up on the forearms during reading, puzzles, coloring, or board games helps strengthen the neck, shoulders, and core.
