Where Brain Balance Began
In the early 1990’s Dr. Robert Melillo identified a very concerning trend. He was seeing a marked increase in children with learning and behavioral issues visiting his practice. These observations started a long and passionate journey for Dr. Melillo as he developed the Brain Balance Program.
Dr. Melillo’s research and extensive clinical experience led him to a clearer understanding of disorders like ADHD, Dyslexia, Processing Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders. He saw the disorders as manifestations of an underlying problem in the brain called Functional Disconnection Syndrome. Imbalance in brain development was the common thread among all the learning and behavioral issues.
Dr. Melillo then developed a cutting-edge approach that addressed correcting brain imbalance by applying a regimen of three key activities that stimulate and promote brain development:
- Sensory Motor Stimulation
- Academic Stimulation
In 1994, Dr. Melillo began implementing this integrated approach to helping children with learning and developmental disorders in his own practice. He went on to spend the next twelve years further refining the program. The results were positive and compelling. This was a programmatic approach that he was determined to make available to as many children as possible. It was obvious to Dr. Melillo that there were thousands of families that were desperately seeking hope and tangible help.
By early 2006, the Brain Balance Program was ready to be replicated on a larger scale. With the help of William Fowler, a pioneer in business development and veteran of Wall Street, the two brought Brain Balance Achievement Centers to reality. Today, Brain Balance is a rapidly growing franchise organization with centers throughout the United States and the mission stays the same – to make the Brain Balance Program available to as many children as possible, enriching the lives of these children and making them the very best they can possibly be.
