My son was in kindergarten when the mention of ADHD medication came. He had problems socializing, organizing, completing assignments and focusing at school and at home his life was a blur of nonstop activity, radical decisions, racing thoughts and feelings of guilt. After researching the side effects of medications, and possible lifetime implications of medications given to children, I embarked on a path of holistic healing for my son. I reached out to doctors regionally as well as on the East and West Coasts and even a PH.D in Singapore.
My son was distraught, he felt guilty because he “didn’t fit in” and the other kids “hated him” he felt that he “wasn’t smart enough” and dreaded going to school, the lowest point for me was when I heard him praying for his teacher to like him. As a mom, my heart hurt constantly.
I was my son’s mom, counselor, defender, medical liaison and chief organizer. The simplest of life skills seemed to be lost to my child so everything from zippers, buttons, clasps and shoestrings seemed to fall on my shoulders and although I gladly helped, I worried about my sons future. He couldn’t eat a full meal without spitting food up, couldn’t sit still and would make random announcements that had no place in conversation.
I happened across Dr. Melillo’s book, Disconnected Kids, in October of 2010 and knew immediately that my child was a candidate for the Brain Balance program. The closest Brain Balance Center at that time was in Plano Texas, which was an impossible commute from Tulsa, so I implemented suggestions from Dr. Melillo’s book and followed the program as closely as possible in my home while searching for alternatives to medication. In March 2012 I got a phone call from my sons dad. “ Hey, have you heard of Brain Balance? They are here in Tulsa now, We should try it.” Within a week, we were enrolled.
Two and a half months later, I am a mom again. I enjoy conversations with my son. He sits still and reads to me, he helps me around the house, he can tie his shoes, zip his pants and is a master of the English language, he even wrote and illustrated his own book.
I am a mom again. I can enjoy my child. No need to corral him or defend him. His friends call and want to hang out with him, he has invites to birthday parties and other social gatherings.
The secondary rewards for me are a greater appreciation for the public school system, stronger relationships with school faculty and family. Brain Balance Tulsa has given me peace and my child a new life. The staff is phenomenal, the owners engaged and personal, their ability to relate is bar none.
Striking out on a journey with Brain Balance of Tulsa was the best decision of my life and the best decision that I have made on my child’s behalf yet. On this last day of first grade, I am grateful.
