A study released this past week in the peer-reviewed journal Pediatrics, finds that mixed-handed children may be twice as likely to experience mental health, language and scholastic problems as well as display more severe symptoms of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Imperial College London conducted the study and reports:
“The study looked at nearly 8,000 children, 87 of whom were mixed-handed, and found that mixed-handed 7- and 8-year old children were twice as likely as their right-handed peers to have difficulties with language and to perform poorly in school. When they reached 15 or 16, mixed-handed adolescents were also at twice the risk of having symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They were also likely to have more severe symptoms of ADHD than their right-handed counterparts.”
When interviewed by NPR, Dr. Alina Rodriguez, the study’s lead researcher, discusses the implications of this study, “[Someone's] mixed-handedness is a marker of brain circuitry that shows a different pattern than the norm — what you see in most people … We think that there are differences in the brain that might explain these difficulties, but there needs to be more research.”
Dr. Robert Melillo, founder of the Brain Balance Program®, discusses a similar phenomenon of Functional Disconnection Syndrome in his book Disconnected Kids. This new study backs up Dr. Melillo’s assertion that ADHD is associated with an under functioning right hemisphere.
ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders in children, affecting over 2 million kids in the United States alone. The exact cause of ADHD has not yet been determined though many practitioners believe neurobiological or genetic elements play a role. This study is an important breakthrough in the sense that it may offer further explanation as to what is going on functionally in the brain of children with ADHD, Dyslexia and other learning disorders.
