Apparent increase of ADHD drug abuse in Iowa

Source: Associated Press; 3:54 AM CDT, June 22, 2009; CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa

Authorities say an increasing number of young people from Eastern Iowa have been seen at hospitals for abusing drugs prescribed for ADHD.

The Iowa Poison Control Center reports that seven people, ages 13 to 24, were seen at Eastern Iowa hospitals in four days for abuse of such medications as Adderall, Concerta, Ritalin LA and Vyvanse.

Center director Linda Kalin says the prescription medications are being abused to get high, to lose weight, to stay awake and to increase mental alertness.

The drugs are prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD.

The surveillance system detected cases in which all the patients had tremors, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate, agitation and vomiting.

Kalin said that the drugs can even be deadly if taken improperly
