Claiming that hyperactivity in children has always existed misleads parents; at least that’s what is dicussed in a recent article “Mozart And Others Had ADHD – Has It Always Been A Disorder? Or Has The Modern Classification Of It Made It A Disorder?” published in Medical News Today by Caitlin Kealey, Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. Basically, the article concludes that ADHD existed in the days of Mozart and the perceived rise and severity of ADHD in children today is due to a change in social, cultural and economics over the last half century. The fact that ADHD is considered a disorder in children today is a modern construct and needs to be approached as such during diagnosis and treatment.
